Data-Mail Acquires Computer-controlled Folder for Quick Changeover Capability

The entrepreneurial spirits of Andy and Joyce Mandell resulted in the creation of Data-Mail, from a one part-time employee company to what is now a 550-employee company. Located in Newington, CT on 270,000 square feet, Data-Mail produces approximately 750 million pieces of mail a year.

Data-Mail acquired the computer-controlled folder, Multimaster CAS, manufactured by Mathias Bäuerle of Germany and distributed in the U.S. by its subsidiary, GBR Systems Corporation. The folder’s chief advantage according to Mandell is its quick changeover capability. "After much research, we found that this folder would work in a specific phase of our operation because of its quick changeover capability and automatic setting features it affords versus its competition," said Mandell. "We use the folder for our shorter job runs where there are a variety of form sizes and formats then it becomes easy to switchover," said Mandell. He added that on a daily basis they need to run multiple samples for clients. "A client will call and request 100 samples of a job we previously ran for them. The set-up is locked in the folder and we simply hit the button rather than spending an hour resetting the folder."

The CAS folders have a large display panel where the operator scrolls through icons to select the fold units for the fold type, enters the fold panel lengths, and hits the set-up button. The fold plates automatically move into position according to the computer data entered. Up to 60 custom fold types can be stored in memory, all recalled by push button in often less than a minute.

Mandell also believes that the folder offers a solution for labor savings. He explains that its often difficult to hire talented mechanical people and labor turnover can be high, so if operators can be trained in setting up folders as well as running them then significant labor savings are involved.

"After much research, we found that this folder would work in a specific phase of our operation because of its quick changeover capability and automatic setting features it affords versus its competition."
