Fala's On-Demand Processing Optimized with Computer-controlled Folding

The Fala Group, a full-service direct marketing company, opened its doors in 1916 as the Fifth Avenue Lettershop and later changed the name to Fifth Avenue Lithographic Associates. Since then, Fala’s success has been built on pioneering breakthrough technologies and believing in "superior work and a superior working relationship". The Fala Group of Melville, NY consists of Fala Direct Marketing, Inc., Fala Graphics, Inc., Fala Sorting Services, Inc. and Fala International Mailing Services, Inc.

As one of the nation’s leaders in on-demand processing, Fala processes over 50 million feet of paper per month at its state-of-the-art laser personalization facility. They have added GBR Systems Corporation’s Mathias Bäuerle GmbH Multimaster CAS folder to optimize their on-demand processing.

The demand for short set-up times and quick job turnaround has become critical in bindery solutions. The CAS folder’s computer-controlled technology meets this demand. It has automatic fold plate set-up and stores in memory 60 custom and seven standard fold types. With the CAS folder, there is a large display panel, the operator scrolls through icons to select the fold units for the fold type, enters the fold panel lengths, and hits the set-up button. The fold plates automatically move into position according to the computer data entered. From parallel, to cross fold, pharmaceutical, and other intricate fold types – all can be recalled instantly by push button with absolute precision.

"With the CAS folder, set-up time is 75% quicker than other folders." states Phil Castellano, manager of mechanical operations. He emphasizes that they can change folds up to 12 times per shift. "You don’t need to shut down the entire operation to change a fold so there is 95% less downtime than other folders." Another major advantage of the CAS folder, according to Joe Sylvestri, manager of laser personalization, is their ability to handle forms more readily for their customers. "We can handle many different types of applications and folds from booklets to gatefolds to barrel folds to slit and nest folds," said Sylvestri. He explains that their confidence in the CAS folder’s quality of folds allows them to take on any unique project.
